Peliatan’s Classical Janger dance – Arjuna’s Meditation

In this performance of classical Janger, the dancers present an interpretation of Arjuna’s meditation on Mount Indrakila with the hope of obtaining supernatural powers that will make him invulnerable to harm and consequently always victorious in battle.

While Arjuna was meditating and concentrating his thoughts on Sang Hyang Widi Wasa, Dewa Bhatara Indra commanded two of his heavenly nymphs Supraba and Tilotama to try to interrupt Arjuna’s meditation. However, they were unsuccessful in their efforts to disturb Arjuna’s concentration. After that, a wild pig tried to disturb Arjuna by shaking the area where Arjuna was meditating on Mount Indrakila so violently that Arjuna’s meditation was interrupted and he regained his awareness. In his anger, he attempted to kill the boar by shooting it with his bow and arrow. However, at the same time, the god Ciwa also shot at the wild pig, and consequently it was not clear whose arrow had first killed the boar.

Since both Arjuna and Ciwa were convinced that it was their Arrow which had killed the boar, a fight broke out between them. The battle concludes with Ciwa transforming himself into the witch Rangda, and presenting Arjuna with a magic weapon called “Pusaka Pasupati Winibasara”, as a reward for his successful meditation.
